The Molecular Research Laboratory (MRL), whose establishment was facilitated by Prof. George Okechukwu Chukwuma, Prof. Ikemefuna Chijioke Uzochukwu, Prof. Joseph Ifeanyichukwu Ikechebelu and Prof. Okechukwu Charles Esimone, is a research centre set up by the Nnamdi Azikiwe University and commissioned in 2022 by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) for culturing of human cells and the detection and research on human pathogens. Prof. Nneka Regina Agbakoba is the current coordinator of this laboratory, with Dr. Izunna Somadina Okwelogu as her deputy. There are several advanced facilities within the laboratory, and we support several departments and faculties within the University. We have several collaborations with institutions and researchers from outside the university who are always welcome to use our facilities. Our facilities enable our postgraduate students and researchers to carry out cutting-edge biomedical research that influences policy change and product development.
There are various rooms housing the different facilities and equipment where biosafety level 2 research can be carried out in these areas: virus isolation, molecular biology and immunology, vaccinology, epidemiology, cancer research, and parasite culture for drug discoveries, toxicology, cytotoxicity assay, wastewater studies, genomic studies and Biobanking Services.
